Brief profile: WADe ASIA Event, 11 Oct and 12 Oct 2019, NSIC Okhla, New Delhi.

WADe India was initiated in 2016 as a nationwide dedicated platform for Woman Architects & Designers of India. Today, this 3 year old brain child of Vertica Dvivedi, has truly emerged as a platform to Celebrate & Spread “Women-led Development” in India and a great event platform for connecting brands with specifiers, architects and designers. It is an endeavour to bring-out women in architecture & interior design on a common platform to exchange ideas, recognize contribution, discuss issues and execute solutions. Detailed Profile:

When one focuses to contribute selflessly, when someone has the vision to serve gallantly, and when someone gives it all to carve something, which initially only her sub-conscious could see, the resultant is bound to be a mammoth-ly inspiring creation – WADe ASIA [World Women in Arts, Architecture and Design ecosystem], in the case of its fervent founder Vertica Dvivedi.

Since the last two editions, WADe has become a fertile ground for people of the design industry (not limited to women) to gather, discuss, debate, and also celebrate developments & design led by women. The ratio of women and men is around 60:40 with a fine balance of architects, interior designers and artists. Sponsorship opportunities are limited in order to ensure the concept and objectives of WADe do not get diluted. At the same time, it gives exclusivity to the few brands who are able to leverage the best of this event.

There are events, and then there is WADe Asia – the one of a kind hub for this genre.

An honest attempt to assemble, acknowledge, and articulate the women-led development of this troposphere, forms the basis of this two day event, scheduled for 11 Oct and 12 Oct 2019 in NSIC Okhla, New Delhi.

While delivering its promise to women entrepreneurs and professionals in building and space design, WADe ASIA has become a wonderful medium for building material brands to connect with the specifier segment. WADe allows more than 2 days of interactions with the speakers and delegates who are in architecture, project management firms, consultancy, design, art and real estate.

2018 is the third year of the WADe affair. The previous two have seen extensive participation from the South Asian fraternity, and about 1000+ professionals from the national as well as the international circuit graced the event. Power-talks from the who’s who in arts, architecture and design, panel discussions with eminent guests and delegates, talk shows with the mentors, deeply informative discussions, master-class from the design maestros, the multiple award categories, and a one of a kind opportunity to gel and network with a top of the class, relevant and an enthusiastic troop were just a handful of highlights. The sheer delight, pure sentiments and immense expectations of the participants, evidently reflect at ‘opinion about WADe’. Some of them look like this:

  • Thanks for adding precious and unforgettable memories to my life: Anju Malla Pradhan, VP – Society of Nepalese Architects, Nepal.
  • Dear Vertica and Madhu, WADe Asia 2017 is one of the best conferences I have attended: Ar. Dorji Yanki, President, Bhutan Institute of Architects, Bhutan.
  • WADe Asia was designed with great skill and handled with immense grace, warmth, and professionalism: Dr Anuradha Chatterjee, Sydney.
  • I was interacting with so many women peers for the first time in the last 25 years: Pratima Joshi, Founder Director – Shelters Associates, Pune.
  • For a young architect such as me, hearing architects of the like of Didi Contractor and seeing her admirable work was truly inspirational: Ar. Tanvi Jain, Ahmedabad.

The testimonials advocate that the faith instilled in WADe ASIA is humongous and some of the reactions are so emotional and triggering, that we are firm to make WADe2019 an even finer, wiser and a prolific affair.

STRL2076-kiran-bediWADe was delighted to welcome the “woman of substance” amongst the guests at the WADe India 2016 event. Dr. Kiran Bedi, WADe’s Guest of Honour for the launch event, gave a powerful ‘Opening speech’ in front of the architects & designers. Here are some excerpts from is Dr. Bedi’s message:

“I want to thank Vertica & Madhu because this is the first time I have got an invitation for attending an event related to Women in Architecture & Design. I loved it because I love this profession and my respect for what you stand for. The country needs you.

I have a building in the rural set up where we have a rural school. I had Ar. Lauri Baker to do it for me. That building doesn’t need an air conditioner, it’s built with local materials and a lot of air circulation. It is such an amazing place. I had no idea of this; I just told what I need. So I think that’s the partnership we are looking at.”

She also spoke about the design of New Tihar Jail and how she has changed it as per requirements of the inmates. “This new design became a trendsetter for new prisons in India. Now many schools of architecture and design connect with me to say that they are designing prisons. I have retained those designs that we had worked on because it was a treasure for me, for being able to make a contribution,” she added.

Vertica Dvivedi,
Founder, WADe Asia,

WADe India 2016 emerged as a powerful, frontrunner event – the first-of-its-kind to enable architect couples, mother-daughter duo, top women architects, and rising ones to showcase their opinions over numerous personal and professional issues. The only mum-daughter duo present at the WADe was the renowned celebrity interior designers – Zarine Khan and Sussanne Khan. While on one hand, Zarine Khan brought the light upon raising her children right and allowing them to pursue their designing dreams – Sussanne spoke on how she feels about the challenges of being a celebrity designer and surviving the industry with its ‘Celebrity’ tag.

As an advice to the young aspirants, they collectively said, “You have to love your job. The crucial part is what you conceptualize, you must have the capability to convey it to your clients and make them visualize at the same time. People say that being a celebrity designer is very easy but one should know that when people spend more money, they want the best job to be done”.

Giving the
answer to the pertinent question of “Are Celebrity designers hired just for name or are they really talented?, Sussanne crisply summed, “See your work speaks for yourself. Nothing that I can say or do go beyond the body of my work”.

Is there any doubt that with so much action at the very first stint – WADe Asia 2017 is sure to come up as an event filled with added fun and frolic!

See the video incorporating the views of leading women of architecture, including Zarine and Sussanne Khan here…

Madhur Daga is the Managing Director of Orient Bell Limited (OBL), one of the leading manufacturers of Ceramic, Vitrified, Wall, Floor and Digital Tiles that cover the entire range of applications for your living and working spaces.

He said, “I know Vertica when Surfaces Reporter was literally just a baby. Today I am so proud & delighted that Vertica and her team have successfully created a platform like WADe Asia. I think there is a big ridge that one needs to cross – between getting a great idea, getting suggestions and executing it. In this country execution sometimes proves to be more difficult, we find battles about doing business every day. So I really want to give Vertica and her team a huge round of applause for having executed all of what she thought.”
